What is NIOS

National Institute of Open Schooling popularly known as NIOS is a platform for students who want to complete their education in private mode. The education board was started by Ministry of Human Resource Development with an aim to provide education to the rural or backward section of the society who could learn without attending schools. It has become India’s largest open education board and is equivalent to formal education of other boards.

About the NIOS Board

NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) is the education board controlled by the Government of India, earlier known as National open school, which was started in 1989. NIOS is a national board that conducts examinations for the 10th and 12th which comes under open schools the same as CBSE and the ISCE to decrease illiteracy and provide education to rural and urban areas. NIOS mainly aims to provide good education to the children staying in remote areas to increase literacy and to have flexible learning. NIOS was established to provide distance education for the 10th and 12th, approximately 1.5 million students enrolled for class 10th and 350,000 students enrolled for class 12th annually, making them the largest open schooling system in the world.

What does NIOS do?

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) provides opportunities to interested learners by making available the following Courses/Programmes of Study through open and distance learning (ODL) mode.

  • Open Basic Education (OBE) Programme for 14+ years age group, adolescents and adults at A, B and C levels that are equivalent to classes III, V and VIII of the formal school system.
  • Secondary Education Course
  • Senior Secondary Education Course
  • Vocational Education Courses/Programmes
  • Life Enrichment Programmes

How does NIOS Function?

NIOS operates through a network of five Departments, 23 Regional Centres, two Sub Regional Centres, two NIOS Cells, and more than 7400 Study Centres (AIs/AVIs) spread all over the country and abroad.NIOS is the largest Open Schooling system in the world with cumulative enrolment of 4.13 million (during last 5 years).

NIOS offers the following courses:

  1. Open Basic Education (OBE) program which has three levels as under:
    a. OBE Level A which is equivalent to Class I-III
    b. OBE Level B which is equivalent to Class IV-V
    c. OBE Level C which is equivalent to Class VI-VIII
  2. Secondary Course which is equivalent to Class X
  3. Senior Secondary Course which is equivalent to Class XII
  4. Vocational Education
  5. Diploma in Elementary Education (D. El. Ed.) for Untrained Teachers
  6. Life Enrichment
  7. Life Skills Program

Courses Offered by NIOS Board 2020

NIOS board conducts examination twice a year i.e in April/May and October/November on the dates fixed by the NIOS. Results of the Public Examination are announced usually six weeks after the last date of examinations.

NIOS 2020 Admission

NIOS application form will be available online on the official website of the board. Candidates studying in 10th/12th class are required to fill out the NIOS board 10th/12th application form at the earliest before the last date arrives. The online registration form for NIOS 12th/10th board exam will be discharged by the National Institute of Schooling on their official website. Students who don’t know how to apply for the registration form online can check the registration form section of this website.

It is obligatory for all students in the 10th/12th class to fill out the NIOS Admission Form 2020 at the latest and before the stipulated deadline to avoid paying a penalty fee or becoming ineligible. The school can also formally go through the application process on behalf of the students. Applicants who wish to appear in the NIOS board exam held in March 2020 must complete the board registration form by the last date.

NIOS 2020 Admission – Eligibility Criteria

Students who fulfil NIOS eligibility criteria can apply for NIOS 2020 admission. Here are the eligibility conditions of online NIOS admission:

Age Limit

  • The minimum age limit for NIOS 10th admission is 14 years as on July 31, 2020. Students who born on or before July 31, 2006, are eligible for NIOS admission 2020.
  • For NIOS 12th admission, the minimum age limit is 15 years as on July 31, 2020. Students who born on or before July 31, 2005, can also apply for NIOS class 12 admission.

Minimum Education

  • He/she must have cleared class 8 from the recognised board or must possess enough knowledge to sit for the class 10 exam. A candidate giving self-certificate and stating that they have studied enough to be eligible for NIOS 10th registration 2020.
  • He/she must have cleared class 10 from a recognized board to apply for NIOS class 12 registration 2020. Students who are applying immediately after passing 10th will not be allowed to sit for the exams for all the subjects in one attempt.

NIOS 2020 Fee Structure

Fee payable for various courses is given in table. Read it carefully. Admission fee payable for different courses include charges for registration, study materials, personal contact programmes , Identity Card etc.

To earn part credit, a learner can also take one or two subjects only. In such case, please pay fees as per the fee structure is given in the Table

NIOS 2020 Documents Required for admission

The student applying for NIOS 2020 admission will have to upload the scanned copy of documents. These documents are considered as proof of eligibility for NIOS 10th or 12th admission. NIOS admit card 2020 is released for the candidates who submit all the required documents in jpg or jpeg files. Here’s the list of documents required for NIOS online admission:

  • Aadhaar card or passport or ration card or other identity proof.
  • Birth certificate for proof of date of birth
  • Address proof i.e. Aadhaar card/water bill/electricity bill/voter ID/ration card
  • Signature (preferably in black ink)
  • Recent passport size colour photograph
  • Class 8th marksheet for students applying for the NIOS 10th or secondary course
  • class 10th marksheet to apply for NIOS 12th exams 2020.
  • Disability certificate for PwD candidates
  • Caste certificate for SC/ST/OBC candidates.
  • Ex-serviceman certificate for candidates applying under Ex-serviceman category

NIOS 2020 Admit card

Admit card for the students during the exam is very important. The National Open School does not allow students without the admit card inside the exam centre. Admit cards contain the student’s name, roll number, branch, father name and the rules and regulations of the exam of the NIOS Secondary/Sr. Secondary. If the admit card has incorrect details of the student, it is advised that the student notifies the National Open School or school authorities immediately to rectify the error.

Verification of the admit card is very necessary for each and every student who is going to attempt the examination of NIOS 10th/12th Board. The NIOS Admit Card 2020 was released on the official website in March 2020 and the National Open School distributed the admit cards for the 10th and 12th in schools that are affiliated with it.

NIOS Syllabus 2020

From the syllabus, candidates can learn about 10 topics that will be asked in the National Open School SSC and Intermediate exam 2020. The syllabus plays a vital role in the NIOS board exam 2020. Each and every student must follow the syllabus that the NIOS open school board provides. From the official website, candidates can download the latest syllabus. NIOS 2020 Admission Fees

A student registering for NIOS will have to pay the admission fee to apply successfully for NIOS 2020 admission online. The admission fee is to be paid through credit card /debit card/net banking.

Apart from the above one will have to pay Rs. 720 per subject for each additional subject, to register for that. Students will need to pay Rs. 50 as the cost of online Application Form. The student will have to pay the NIOS exam fees 2020 after the confirmation of admission to be eligible to sit for the exam.

NIOS Result 2020

The whole procedure of checking answer sheets and incorporating results takes 6 weeks time from the date of the last examination.
