  • 10 August: World Biofuel Day
    Every year 10 August is observed as World Biofuel Day with aim to create awareness about importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels. It is being observed by Union Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas since 2015.

 

  • 9 August:Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples
    Observance of this day seeks to recognize the contributions & achievements of indigenous people to improve world issues such as environmental protection. ‘Indigenous Languages’. It is dedicated to languages of indigenous peoples’.

 

  • Manipur tops in Breastfeeding, Infant & Young Child Feeding
    The report card on Breastfeeding was released by Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister. Union Heath Minister also appealed influential personality on social media to spread message of benefits of breastfeeding to masses.

 

  • ISRO institutes Vikram Sarabhai Journalism Award in Space
    Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has instituted two categories of awards in journalism- Vikram Sarabhai Journalism Award in Space Science, Technology and Research. These awards were instituted as part of centenary year celebrations of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, father of Indian space programme.

 

  • India to conduct 1st National Time Release Study
    To enable faster movement of cargo across borders to benefit traders. The Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, as part of its strategic commitment to improve global trade, is conducting India’s first national Time Release Study (TRS) between 1st – 7th August.

 

  • Maharastra: digital fingerprint &iris scanning system
    Maharashtra became the first state to adopt a digital fingerprint and iris scanning system to aid police investigations. The Automated Multi-modal Biometric Identification System (AMBIS) adopted by the Maharashtra Police will soon be replicated across the country.

 

  • India’s 1st large-scale trial of two new TB vaccines
    ICMR has launched India’s first large-scale trial for two new TB vaccines, a report in the IE has indicated. This is the first time a large preventive TB vaccine trial involving more than 12,000 healthy household contacts of newly diagnosed TB patients from across six states of India are set to be enrolled.

 

  • GJ 357 d: NASA’s TESS discovers 1st nearby super-earth
    The super-Earth planet — named GJ 357 d — was discovered in early 2019 owing to NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. The exoplanet is more massive than our own blue planet, astronomy professor said.

 

  • First 3-D Smart Traffic Signal by Chitkara University
    In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, Mohali traffic police have launched 3-D Smart Traffic Signal devised by the students of Chitkara University Incubated Start-up. The wireless system, called ‘Intelights’, has been installed at the traffic crossing near Quark City on Airport Road.

 

  • Sushma Swaraj
    Diplomats of 51 countries have written separate condolence messages for veteran BJP leader and India’s former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. She was the second woman to hold the office, after Indira Gandhi.

 

  • J&K Reorganisation Bill 2019 passed in Rajya Sabha
    The Bill was passed in Rajya Sabha on 5 August 2019 and passed in Lok Sabha on 6 August 2019. The Bill proposes to reorganise the State of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories, one to be called Jammu and Kashmir, and the other Ladakh.

 

  • Papua New Guinea highest number of living
    Papua New Guinea has the highest number of living indigenous languages in the world with 840. India stands fourth with 453. UN observes the year 2019 as its International Year of Indigenous Languages.
