  • New Wasp species identified in Goa

Scientists have recently identified a new species of wasp from the genus Kudakrumia in Goa. The wasp species was collected from Western Ghats forest. Nomenclature: The wasp is dubbed as Kudakrumia rangnekari. It has been named after Parag Rangnekar, a Goa-based researcher.

 

  • Binny: India’s only Orangutan dies

India’s only orangutan named Binny died at the age of 41 in Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The lone female orangutan Binny, was brought to Nandankanan Zoo from Pune’s Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park on 20 November 2003, when she was 25 years old.

 

  • 29 May: International Everest Day observed

The day is celebrated with processions, memorial events, and special events in Kathmandu, Nepal and the Everest region. The day is observed every year in memory of the first summit of Mt. Everest on 29 May 1953 undertaken by Sir Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa from Nepal who became first humans to achieve the feat.

    The name of this global book prize is in reference to the ‘nine dots puzzle’ which is a lateral thinking puzzle that can only be solved by thinking outside the box. to promote, engage and encourage innovative thinking so as to address problems facing modern world. (Annie Zaidi 2019)

 

  • India’s first ‘Blockchain District’

The Telangana government has decided to set up the India’s first ‘Blockchain district’ in Hyderabad to create an ecosystem for all the start-ups and institutes working in the space. Though the Blockchain technology encompasses all domains, the district would focus on banking, financial services and insurance.

 

  • Ivo Karlovic: Oldest Man to win a match at French Open

Ivo Karlovic (40) of Croatia has become the oldest man to win a match at the French Open since 1973, after he defeated the 37-year-old Feliciano Lopez of Spain in a first-round duel of the 2019 French Open Tennis Tournament at Roland Garros.

 

  • 1st Indian fund house: WhatsApp transaction platform
    Motilal Oswal Asset Management Company (AMC) has launched its WhatsApp transaction platform for new as well as existing investors. It is the first of its kind initiative by any fund house in India to do mutual fund transactions through the popular cross-platform messaging app.

 

  • Fight Lt. Mohana Singh: First Woman Pilot to fly Hawk Jet

The Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Flight Lieutenant Mohana Singh became first ever woman pilot to fly by day on Hawk advanced jet aircraft. To achieve this mile stone of being fully operational on the Hawk Jets she completed an exhausting 4 Aircraft combat sortie.

 

  • Puerto Williams: World’s Southernmost City
    Puerto Williams in Chile has become world’s southernmost city after its status upgraded from hamlet to city. It took over the title from Ushuaia in Argentina which was world’s southernmost city till recently. It is the main settlement, port and naval base on Navarino Island in Chile.

 

  • 31 May: World No Tobacco Day observed
    Theme for year 2019 was ‘tobacco and lung health. The annual campaign seeks to create awareness about harmful and deadly effects of tobacco consumption and second-hand (passive) smoke exposure on on human health and also to discourage tobacco consumption in any form.
