The Staff Selection Commission will hold a competitive examination for recruitment to the posts of Lower Divisional Clerk/ Junior Secretariat Assistant, Postal Assistant/ Sorting Assistant and Data Entry Operators for various Ministries/ Departments/ Offices of the Government of India.

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) carries out the Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL, 10+2) Exam to recruit persons at various posts like:

  • Postal Assistants/Sorting Assistants(PA/SA)
  • Data Entry Operator (DEO).
  • Lower Divisional Clerk (LDC).
  • Court Clerk.

SSC CHSL 2019-20 Exam Pattern

The Combined Graduate Level (CHSL) Exam conducted annually by Staff Selection Commission (SSC) consists of four phases, where each phase needs to be cleared depending upon the requirement of different posts. SSC CHSL 2019-20 Exam will be conducted in three tiers, i.e., Tier – I, Tier – II and Tier – III  as shown below in the table:

In the past few years, SSC has made some changes in the exam pattern. Students must make note of changes in exam pattern and syllabus before beginning the SSC CHSL exam preparation. Below are some important points to take note of:

  • Tier – I objective exam will be of 60 minutes duration in online mode.
  • Tier – II Paper will be a descriptive Paper of 100 Marks in Pen and Paper Mode.
  • Tier – III will be a Skill Test/ Typing Test for the qualified candidates will be conducted on computers provided by the Commission or its authorized agency.

SSC CHSL 2019-20 Tier-I (Computer Based Examination)

SSC CHSL 2019-20 Tier-I exam is an objective exam which will be conducted online. The exam comprises of four sections having 100 questions (25 questions in each section) which will account for a total of 200 marks (maximum 50 marks in each section). The time duration of Tier-1 exam will be 60 minutes.

The Tier-I Examination will consist of Objective Type, Multiple choice questions only. The questions will be set both in English & Hindi for Part-II, III & IV.

Points to remember:

  • There is negative marking in SSC CHSL 2019-20 Tier 1 Exam. 0.5 marks will be deducted from every question that is attempted wrong by a candidate in all the sections.
  • The exam duration is 80 minutes for candidates who are visually handicapped and suffering from Cerebral Palsy.

SSC CHSL 2019-20 Tier-II (Descriptive Paper)

Tier-II Paper will be a descriptive Paper of 100 Marks in Pen and Paper Mode. The duration of the Descriptive Paper will be for one hour (20 minutes compensatory time will also be provided to the candidates eligible for scribes). The Paper would comprise writing of an Essay of 200-250 words and a Letter/Application of approximately 150-200 words.

  • The minimum qualifying marks in Tier-II would be 33 per cent.
  • The paper will have to be written either in Hindi or in English. Part paper written in Hindi and Part in English will be awarded zero marks.
  • Candidates must write their correct Roll Number at the prescribed places on the cover page of the Answer Book. Candidates must also affix signature and Left-hand Thumb Impression in the relevant
    columns in the Answer Book. Answer Books not bearing Roll Number, Signature and Left-hand Thumb Impression shall be awarded zero marks.
  • Candidates are strictly advised not to write any personal identity e.g. name, roll number, mobile number, address, etc inside the Answer Book. The candidates who fail to adhere to these instructions will be awarded zero marks even if marks are awarded during the evaluation process.

SSC CHSL 2019-20 Tier-III (Skill Test/ Typing Test)

  • Skill Test/ Typing Test for the qualified candidates will be conducted on computers provided by the Commission or its authorized agency.
  • Skill Test/ Typing Test will be conducted in the cities where Regional Offices of the Commission are located or as decided by the Commission.
  • Skill Test/ Typing Test will be of qualifying nature.
  • Errors in the Skill Test will be calculated up to 2 decimal places.

SSC CHSL 2019-20 Eligibility Criteria

There are 4 important criteria which a candidate must fulfill in order to be eligible for the SSC CHSL 2019-20. The 4 parameters are given below:

1. Nationality/ Citizenship:

  • A candidate must be either:
    (a) a citizen of India, or
    (b) a subject of Nepal, or
    (c) a subject of Bhutan, or
    (d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before the 1st January,1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
    (e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka,
    East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania(Formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar),Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
  • Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
  • A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary may be admitted to the Examination but the offer of appointment will be given only after, the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him/ her by the Government of India.

2. Age Limit: Age limit for the posts is 18-27 years as on 01-01-2020 (i.e. Candidates born not before 02-01-1993 and not later than 01-01-2002).

Permissible relaxation in upper age limit for different categories are as below:

3. Essential Educational Qualifications (As on 01-01-2020):The educational qualifications varies according to the post for SSC CHSL 2019 as shown below:

Candidates must have the following educational qualifications to appear for SSC CHSL 2020:

For LDC/ JSA, PA/ SA, DEO (except DEOs in C&AG): The candidates must have passed class 12 or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.

For Data Entry Operator (DEO Grade ‘A’) in the Office of Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG): The candidates must have passed class 12 in Science stream with Mathematics as a subject from a recognized Board or equivalent.

Note: Candidates who have not yet acquired but will acquire the educational qualification and produce supporting documentary evidence from the Board/ University as on January 1, 2020 are also eligible.

SSC CHSL Syllabus 2019-20

SSC CHSL Tier 1 Syllabus

English Language: Spot the Error, Fill in the Blanks, Synonyms/ Homonyms, Antonyms, Spellings/ Detecting mis-spelt words, Idioms & Phrases, One word substitution, Improvement of Sentences, Active/ Passive Voice of Verbs, Conversion into Direct/ Indirect narration, Shuffling of Sentence parts, Shuffling of Sentences in a passage, Cloze Passage, Comprehension Passage.

General Intelligence: It would include questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. The test will include questions on Semantic Analogy, Symbolic operations, Symbolic/ Number Analogy, Trends, Figural Analogy, Space Orientation, Semantic Classification, Venn Diagrams, Symbolic/ Number Classification, Drawing inferences, Figural Classification, Punched hole/ patternfolding & unfolding, Semantic Series, Figural Pattern-folding and completion, Number Series, Embedded figures, Figural Series, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Emotional Intelligence, Word Building, Social Intelligence, Coding and de-coding, Other subtopics, if any Numerical operations.

Quantitative Aptitude:

Number Systems: Computation of Whole Number, Decimal and Fractions, Relationship between numbers.

Fundamental arithmetical operations: Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Square roots, Averages, Interest (Simple and Compound), Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Allegation, Time and distance, Time and work.

Algebra: Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra and Elementary surds (simple problems) and Graphs of Linear Equations.

Geometry: Familiarity with elementary geometric figures and facts: Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles.

Mensuration: Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Sphere, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square Base.

Trigonometry: Trigonometry, Trigonometric ratios, Complementary angles, Height and distances (simple problems only) Standard Identities like sin2 𝜃 + Cos2 𝜃=1 etc.,

Statistical Charts: Use of Tables and Graphs: Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar-diagram, Pie-chart.

General Awareness: Questions are designed to test the candidate‟s general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions are also designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of an educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighboring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General policy and scientific research

Important Points:

• There is negative marking in SSC CHSL 2020 Tier 1 Exam. Giving a wrong answer to a question will lead to a penalty of 0.5 marks in all sections

• The exam duration is 75 minutes for candidates who are visually handicapped.

 

SSC CHSL Tier 2 Syllabus

This is a descriptive exam that is designed to test the written skills of the candidates in English/Hindi. The Paper would comprise writing of an Essay of 200-250 words and Letter/Application writing of approximately 150-200 words. The minimum qualifying marks in Tier-II would be 33 per cent. The performance in Tier II would be included for preparing merit. The best way to prepare for the same is to read lots of articles from various newspapers. Apart from this, you need to be well aware of the pattern of Letter and Application.

Important Points:

• The exam is of 60 minutes’ duration and carries 100 marks.

• The questions are based on 10 level.

• The exam is qualifying in nature.

• Part paper written in Hindi and Part in English will not be evaluated.

• The exam duration is 80 minutes for candidates who are visually handicapped or suffer from cerebral palsy.

 

SSC CHSL Tier 3 Exam Syllabus

The Tier 3 of SSC CHSl Exam 2019 comprises of a couple of skill tests which are required for certain government posts.

Skill Test for Data Entry Operator(DEO):

• Data Entry Speed of 8,000 (eight thousand) Key Depressions per hour on Computer.

• The duration of the Test will be 15 (Fifteen) minutes .

Typing Test for Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant LDCs and Court Clerks:

• Typing Test will be conducted in English or Hindi and candidates while applying for the Examination, will have to indicate his/her choice/option for Skill Test Medium in the Application Form.

• Typing Test will be of qualifying in nature.

• It will be administered on the Computer, to be provided by the Commission or any agency authorized by the Commission.

• Candidates opting for English medium should have typing speed of 35 words per minute.

• Candidates opting for Hindi medium should have typing speed of 30 words per minute.

• The speed will be adjudged on the accuracy of typing on the Computer of a given text passage in 10 minutes.

• Visually Handicapped candidates (with 40% disability and above) will be allowed 30 minutes.

SSC CHSL 2019-20 Vacancy

The total number of vacancies for SSC CHSL 2020 exam will be released, once the notification has been released for the same. Vacancies will be determined in due course. SSC CHSL Application Fee

• The required application fee is Rs. 100/

• Exemption: No fee is required to be paid by female, SC, ST, Physically Handicapped, and Ex-Servicemen candidates

• Applications fee should be pay only through SBI either in the form of challan or through SBI Net Banking or any other bank Credit/Debit Card. Challan form will be generated online

• To pay fee in cash, candidate should take print out of challan generated online after the completion of Part-1 registration. Deposit the requisite fee in any branch of SBI and then continue with the Part-2 registration

• Those candidates who want to pay online can go directly to part-2 registration after completion of part-1 registration. Candidate must supply registration number and date of birth to continue to Part-2 registration

 

SSC CHSL 2019-20 How to apply

  • Applications must be submitted in online mode only at the official website of SSC Headquarters i.e. https://ssc.nic.in. For detailed instructions, please refer to Annexure-III and Annexure-IV of this Notice.
  • Last date for submission of online applications is 10-01-2020 (2400 Hours).
  • Candidates are advised in their own interest to submit online applications much before the closing date and not to wait till the last date to avoid the possibility of disconnection/ inability or failure to login to the SSC website on account of heavy load on the website during the closing days.
  • The Commission does not accept any responsibility for the candidates not being able to submit their applications within the last date on account of the aforesaid reasons or for any other reason beyond the control of the Commission.
  • Before submission of the online application, candidates must check that they have filled correct details in each field of the form. After submission of the online application form, no change/ correction/ modification will be allowed under any circumstances. Requests received in this regard in any form like Post, Fax, Email, by hand, etc shall not be entertained.

 

SSC CHSL 2019-20 Admit Card

Every candidate who registers for SSC CHSL Exam 2020 within stipulated time will be assigned an e-admit card/hall ticket/call letter that can be downloaded from the official website of SSC. The admit card for the CHSL Tier-1 exam will be released first followed by the admit card of CHSL Tier-2 exam (administered to only those candidates who qualify for Tier 1 exam).
